Economist & Financial Crisis Expert · Roubini Macro Associates / NYU

Financial crisis prediction, systemic risk analysis, housing bubble identification, sovereign debt crisis, financial stability commentary

Nouriel Roubini is an economist and professor at New York University's Stern School of Business. He gained worldwide fame for correctly predicting the US housing bubble collapse and subsequent financial crisis in a 2006 IMF presentation, when virtually all mainstream economists expected continued growth. He warned of a housing bust followed by a banking crisis at a time when such predictions were considered extreme. The accuracy of his prediction earned him the nickname "Dr. Doom." He subsequently provided commentary on the European sovereign debt crisis, global imbalances, and various other financial stability risks. He founded Roubini Macro Associates to provide institutional clients with macro economic analysis. His framework for analyzing debt sustainability — distinguishing between countries with high debt levels that are manageable given growth and primary surplus prospects and those facing genuine debt distress — has provided a practical tool for assessing sovereign risk that goes beyond simple debt-to-GDP ratios.
