Neil Irwin

Economic Journalist & Author · Axios / The New York Times

Central banking journalism, macro economic explanations, Fed coverage, economic inequality

Neil Irwin authored "The Alchemists: Three Central Bankers and a World on Fire" (2013), which provided an inside account of how Ben Bernanke (Fed), Mervyn King (BoE), and Jean-Claude Trichet (ECB) coordinated during the 2008 financial crisis. He worked at The Washington Post, then moved to The New York Times where he wrote for the Upshot section on economic issues. Irwin is known for translating complex macroeconomic concepts into accessible journalism for general audiences. He later joined Axios to continue economic and policy reporting. His 2014 book "The Alchemists" and his subsequent work at Upshot pioneered a style of economic journalism that combined data visualization, historical context, and clear prose to explain how macroeconomic forces affect ordinary people's lives — an approach that influenced a generation of economics journalists and raised the standard for data-driven explanatory writing about monetary and fiscal policy.
