Nathaniel Rothschild
European high finance, mining sector, commodity investments, Anglo-American financial networks
Nathaniel "Nat" Rothschild is the heir to the Rothschild banking dynasty, one of the most storied names in European financial history. He studied at Oxford University and began his career at Lazard before co-founding Atticus Capital in 1995 with Timothy Barakett, which grew to manage over $20 billion at its peak. Atticus was known for concentrated long/short equity positions with a focus on global mining and resources companies. After Atticus wound down in 2011, Rothschild established NR Investments to manage his personal capital. He has been involved in numerous corporate and political controversies, including high-profile disputes over Indonesian mining company Bumi plc, where he led a complex cross-border transaction that became a cautionary tale for emerging market resource investments. Despite controversies, Rothschild remains a significant figure in European finance and commodity markets.
