Mukesh Ambani

Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries

Indian economy, telecom, energy, retail, digital infrastructure

Mukesh Ambani was born in 1957 in Aden, Yemen (then a British colony), to Dhirubhai Ambani, the legendary founder of Reliance Industries. He grew up in a modest chawl apartment in Mumbai before the family's fortunes rose. He studied chemical engineering at the University of Mumbai and briefly attended Stanford's MBA program before returning to India to help build Reliance. After Dhirubhai's death in 2002, a bitter succession battle with his brother Anil was resolved by their mother, splitting Reliance into two groups. Mukesh retained control of the core oil refining, petrochemicals, and gas businesses. He built the Jamnagar refinery complex in Gujarat into the world's largest, processing over 1.4 million barrels per day. This industrial base generated the cash flow that funded his next — and most audacious — move. In 2016 Ambani launched Jio, a 4G telecom network that offered free voice calls and nearly free data, spending over $35 billion to build nationwide infrastructure from scratch. The move was deliberately disruptive — it crashed incumbent telecom prices, forced competitors into mergers or bankruptcy, and brought 400+ million Indians online for the first time. Jio Platforms subsequently attracted $20 billion in foreign investment from Facebook, Google, Intel, Qualcomm, and Silver Lake, validating Ambani's vision of building India's digital ecosystem. Ambani operates with a combination of industrial-scale capital deployment and long-term strategic patience that few business leaders in the world can match. He is deeply connected to Indian political and business networks, maintains a relatively low personal profile despite his immense wealth, and is now grooming the next generation of Ambanis for leadership. His vision centers on making Reliance a new-energy and digital services conglomerate for India's next billion consumers.
