Mort Zuckerman
Commercial office real estate, REIT development, media ownership, Boston real estate market
Mort Zuckerman co-founded Boston Properties in 1970, which grew into one of the largest office REITs in the US with iconic properties including the General Motors Building in New York and the Embarcadero Center in San Francisco. He also owned major media properties including US News & World Report and the New York Daily News. Zuckerman was a prominent voice in both real estate and media circles, and served as chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. Boston Properties is now one of the largest publicly traded office landlords in the US. Throughout his career, Zuckerman demonstrated that first-class commercial real estate in gateway cities could serve as both a financial asset and a vehicle for civic influence, as ownership of marquee office buildings gave him relationships with major corporations and city governments.
