global
Miguel Stilwell d'Andrade became CEO of EDP – Energias de Portugal in 2021. An engineer by training with an MBA from MIT Sloan, Stilwell joined EDP in 2005 and rose through roles in strategy and renewable energy before taking the top position. EDP is Portugal's largest utility and one of Europe's biggest energy companies, with operations in electricity generation, distribution, and supply across multiple continents. Stilwell's defining strategic agenda is the acceleration of EDP's renewable energy transformation. Through its listed subsidiary EDP Renováveis (EDPR), EDP operates one of the world's largest wind and solar portfolios. The company has committed to exiting coal entirely and significantly reducing natural gas exposure while scaling wind (onshore and offshore), solar, green hydrogen, and battery storage. By 2025, EDP had renewable capacity exceeding 16 GW globally. His key leadership challenges include managing the capital intensity of renewable buildout, navigating electricity price volatility in European markets, executing the delisting of EDPR (EDP announced plans to fully integrate its renewable subsidiary), and competing for project permits and grid connections in an increasingly crowded renewable development market. Stilwell's decisions on renewable capacity targets, capital allocation between geographies, EDPR integration execution, and grid infrastructure investment are the primary drivers of EDP's stock price on Euronext Lisbon.
