Masamichi Terabatake

President & CEO of Japan Tobacco · Japan Tobacco

global

Masamichi Terabatake became president and CEO of Japan Tobacco in 2020, leading the world's third-largest tobacco company by international sales volume. JT operates across two main segments: Japan Domestic (where it holds approximately 60% market share but faces structural volume decline) and Japan Tobacco International (JTI), which sells cigarettes in over 130 countries under brands including Winston, Camel, Mevius, and LD. JTI is the fastest-growing of the major international tobacco businesses, consistently gaining market share in key regions. Terabatake's most critical strategic challenge is the heated tobacco transition. Philip Morris's IQOS has captured significant share of the Japanese tobacco market — historically JT's most profitable — forcing JT to invest heavily in its competing Ploom product line. The heated tobacco category now represents a substantial and growing portion of the Japanese market, and JT's success or failure with Ploom will significantly impact its domestic profitability. Internationally, JT is pursuing a dual strategy of maintaining combustible cigarette share while building heated tobacco distribution. Terabatake's execution on Ploom market share gains in Japan, JTI's international volume and pricing growth, and the company's generous dividend policy (JT typically pays out 75%+ of profits as dividends) are the primary drivers of the stock.
