Leads Detroit's largest automaker through the most expensive industrial transformation in history — betting $35+ billion on EVs and autonomous driving while trucks and SUVs fund the transition

Mary Barra has served as Chair and CEO of General Motors since 2014, becoming the first woman to lead a major global automaker. Under her leadership, GM has committed $35+ billion to electric vehicles and autonomous driving — the largest industrial transformation bet in automotive history. GM's Ultium EV platform underpins the Chevrolet Equinox EV (targeting the mass market), Silverado EV (electric pickup), Blazer EV, Cadillac Lyriq and Celestiq (luxury EVs), GMC Hummer EV, and BrightDrop (commercial EVs). GM's traditional business remains highly profitable: the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickup trucks, along with profitable SUVs (Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Escalade), generate the cash flow that funds the EV transition. GM Financial provides captive auto financing. The company has also invested in Cruise (autonomous vehicle subsidiary, though ambitions have been scaled back after a pedestrian safety incident) and software-defined vehicles (combining hardware and software for recurring revenue). The EV transition path has been bumpy: GM has adjusted EV production targets downward, paused or delayed some EV programs, and acknowledged that the consumer transition to EVs is happening more slowly and unevenly than initially projected. Key stock drivers include US vehicle sales (particularly full-size trucks and SUVs), EV sales volumes and profitability trajectory, Chinese market performance (GM's Buick brand has significant China exposure), Cruise autonomous vehicle strategy, UAW labor costs, competitive dynamics against Ford, Stellantis, Toyota, and Tesla, and the overall pace of the US EV transition.
