Markus Krebber became CEO of RWE AG in 2021, inheriting and accelerating one of the most remarkable corporate transformations in European industrial history. RWE was once Germany's largest coal-fired electricity generator and one of Europe's biggest CO₂ emitters — operating massive lignite mines and coal power plants in the Rhineland. Through a complex asset swap with E.ON completed in 2020, RWE divested its retail energy supply business and grid networks and received E.ON's renewable energy operations, fundamentally reshaping the company's portfolio toward clean energy. Today, RWE is one of the world's largest renewable energy companies, with over 35 GW of installed generation capacity including onshore wind (one of the largest portfolios globally), offshore wind (the #2 developer worldwide), solar, hydropower, and battery storage. The company operates across Europe, the United States (where it is one of the largest renewable electricity generators), and Asia-Pacific. RWE also retains a diminishing portfolio of conventional generation that provides baseload power and cash flow during the transition. Under Krebber's leadership, RWE has committed to investing €55 billion in renewable energy through 2030, with the goal of growing clean energy capacity to over 65 GW. Key stock drivers include renewable energy policy and subsidy frameworks, offshore wind development success, power prices (which drive profitability for existing generation), the pace of coal phase-out in Germany, interest rates (which affect the economics of capital-intensive renewable projects), and Krebber's capital allocation decisions between growth investment and shareholder returns.
