Mark Wiedman
Global — ETF industry, passive investing, index investing, BlackRock, asset management
Mark Wiedman served as Global Head of iShares and Index Investments at BlackRock from 2011 to 2019, overseeing the growth of iShares into the world's largest ETF provider. During his tenure, iShares expanded from approximately $500 billion to over $2 trillion in assets — a period during which ETFs became the dominant investment vehicle for institutional and retail investors globally. Wiedman was instrumental in expanding iShares beyond its traditional equity index products into fixed income ETFs, factor-based smart beta strategies, and sustainable/ESG ETFs, fundamentally broadening what ETFs could be used for. He also led the global distribution expansion of iShares into Asia, Latin America, and Europe. After leading iShares, Wiedman took on broader strategic roles at BlackRock. His work building iShares coincided with and helped accelerate one of the most significant structural shifts in asset management — the migration of trillions from active to passive management — reshaping how securities markets are priced, how corporate governance is exercised, and how retail investors access financial markets.
