Mark Schneider

CEO of Nestlé · Nestlé

global

Mark Schneider is the CEO of Nestlé, the world's largest food and beverage company, headquartered in Vevey, Switzerland, with annual revenue exceeding CHF 90 billion and operations spanning virtually every country on Earth. Born in 1965 in Germany, Schneider holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and spent over 20 years at Fresenius, the healthcare group, where he served as CEO and transformed it into a leading global health company. He joined Nestlé in 2017, becoming the first outsider to lead the company in nearly 100 years. Schneider's leadership has been defined by aggressive portfolio reshaping. He divested Nestlé's U.S. confectionery business to Ferrero, sold the Nestlé Waters North America brands, and exited lower-growth categories to concentrate on areas with stronger structural tailwinds. Simultaneously, he invested heavily in health science through Nestlé Health Science (including acquisitions like The Bountiful Company), expanded the premium coffee portfolio (Nespresso and the Starbucks at-home license), and pushed into plant-based foods and functional nutrition. His strategic vision centers on transforming Nestlé from a legacy packaged food conglomerate into a nutrition, health, and wellness company. This pivot reflects his conviction that consumer demand is shifting toward health-conscious products and that Nestlé's unmatched global distribution infrastructure can be redirected toward higher-margin, science-backed nutrition products. Schneider has navigated Nestlé through significant challenges including commodity inflation, supply chain disruptions, and the tension between pricing-driven growth and volume. His tenure has also involved managing activist investor pressure from Third Point's Daniel Loeb, who pushed for faster transformation. A disciplined operator with a healthcare executive's perspective, Schneider represents a departure from Nestlé's traditionally insular culture and a bet that external leadership can accelerate the reinvention of a 158-year-old institution.
