Mark Leonard founded Constellation Software in 1995 and has built it into one of Canada's largest companies by market capitalization through one of the most remarkable acquisition machines in corporate history. Constellation acquires small and medium-sized vertical market software (VMS) businesses — companies that provide mission-critical, specialized software for specific industries like municipal government, public transit, hospitality, healthcare, utilities, and education. Leonard's strategy is deceptively simple but extraordinarily difficult to replicate: find VMS companies with high recurring revenue, sticky customer bases, and defensible market positions; acquire them at reasonable prices; provide operational support and best practices; and let them continue operating independently.
