Mark Carney
Climate finance, transition finance, central bank climate risk integration, sustainable finance standards, GFANZ coalition building
Mark Carney served as Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and then Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020 — the first person to lead two G7 central banks. During his tenure at the Bank of England, he was an early and influential advocate for central banks integrating climate risk into financial stability frameworks, giving a landmark 2015 speech at Lloyd's of London on the financial risks of climate change. After leaving the Bank of England, he joined Brookfield Asset Management as Head of Transition Investing and became Chair of GFANZ (Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero), a coalition of financial institutions committed to net-zero goals. He also served as the UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance. Before his central banking career, he worked at Goldman Sachs for 13 years in London, Tokyo, New York, and Toronto. His TCFD work and climate finance advocacy helped mainstream climate risk as a legitimate prudential and investment consideration for financial institutions globally, spanning central banks, asset managers, and insurance companies.
