Mark Barrenechea

Vice Chair, CEO & CTO of OpenText · OpenText

global

Mark Barrenechea has served as Vice Chair, CEO, and CTO of OpenText Corporation since 2012, executing one of the most aggressive acquisition strategies in enterprise software. Under his leadership, OpenText has transformed from a mid-sized Canadian content management company into the world's largest information management software firm with over $5 billion in annual revenue. His dual CEO/CTO role is unusual in large-cap tech and reflects his deep technical involvement in product strategy. Barrenechea's M&A track record is extensive: notable deals include the acquisitions of GXS (a B2B integration leader), Documentum and other assets from Dell EMC, Carbonite (backup and recovery), and the transformative $6 billion acquisition of Micro Focus in 2023. The Micro Focus deal nearly doubled OpenText's revenue and added products in IT operations management, application modernization, and cybersecurity. However, it also added significant debt and integration complexity. Following the Micro Focus acquisition, Barrenechea has focused on deleveraging the balance sheet, including divesting certain lower-growth product lines (such as the AMC business sold to Rocket Software). His strategy centers on moving OpenText's installed base to cloud subscriptions, integrating AI capabilities across the product portfolio, and achieving the cost synergies promised from Micro Focus. Key variables for OpenText's stock include the pace of cloud transition, debt reduction trajectory, organic revenue growth resumption after years of acquisition-driven growth, and competitive dynamics against Microsoft, SAP, and Salesforce in the enterprise information management space.
