Designed consensus, EVM compatibility and lightweight mobile client architecture

Led specification and implementation choices for the chain's consensus and execution layer that determined performance and security trade‑offs. Defined validator selection, staking and slashing mechanics and integrated an EVM‑compatible virtual machine so existing smart contracts could be ported to Celo. Those protocol design decisions directly affected validator economics, finality times and gas semantics used by applications. Directed engineering work to produce a lightweight mobile client and off‑chain indexing patterns optimized for low‑bandwidth environments. The mobile‑first client model and attendant light sync protocols allowed wallet partners to offer near‑instant UX on smartphones, which in turn changed adoption patterns and on‑chain activity distribution across regions. Contributed to on‑chain upgrade processes and technical governance proposals, drafting RFCs and activating hard forks or parameter changes. Technical specifications authored and shepherded through governance had lasting effects on how tokens were used for staking, fee markets and the feasibility of Layer‑2 integrations on the platform.
