Marc Rowan
Private credit, insurance capital strategy, Apollo transformation, alternative asset management
Marc Rowan co-founded Apollo Global Management with Leon Black in 1990 after both left Drexel Burnham Lambert following Michael Milken's indictment. He became CEO in 2021 after Leon Black stepped down amid controversies. Rowan orchestrated the acquisition and integration of Athene Holding, an insurance company, which gave Apollo access to long-duration insurance liabilities to deploy into private credit strategies. This insurance model became highly influential in the alternatives industry. Under Rowan, Apollo has expanded rapidly into private credit, becoming one of the world's largest private credit managers. Apollo's assets under management surpassed $650 billion under his leadership, reflecting the firm's successful transformation from primarily a private equity shop into a diversified credit and alternative investment platform with the Athene insurance float as a distinctive competitive advantage.
