Marc Rowan

CEO & Co-Founder of Apollo Global Management · Apollo Global Management

Global private equity, private credit, insurance asset management, alternative assets industry, Athene Holdings

Marc Rowan co-founded Apollo Global Management in 1990 with Leon Black and Josh Harris after all three left Drexel Burnham Lambert following its collapse. While Black served as CEO for decades, Rowan was the architect of Apollo's insurance strategy, most notably creating Athene Holding, a retirement services company that uses insurance liabilities as patient capital to fund Apollo's alternative investments. This model — pairing an insurance company with an asset manager — became a template for the industry. Rowan became CEO of Apollo in 2021 following Black's departure amid personal controversies. Under his leadership, Apollo merged with Athene to create a fully integrated platform. He has aggressively expanded Apollo into private credit, infrastructure, and hybrid capital strategies, growing the firm to over $650 billion in assets and positioning it as one of the most powerful forces in global credit markets.
