Marc Benioff

Founder, Chairman and CEO of Salesforce

CRM, enterprise cloud, SaaS ecosystem, AI agents

Marc Benioff was born in 1964 in San Francisco. He began programming at age 15 and sold his first piece of software — a game called "How to Juggle" — while still in high school. He studied business administration at the University of Southern California and joined Oracle at age 23, where he became one of the youngest vice presidents in the company's history under Larry Ellison's mentorship. In March 1999, Benioff launched Salesforce from a rented apartment on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco with the provocative "No Software" tagline and logo showing the word "software" inside a red circle with a line through it. The concept of delivering enterprise CRM through a web browser was considered absurd by most incumbents. However, the subscription model and ease of deployment resonated powerfully with businesses, and Salesforce went public in 2004. Benioff built Salesforce into a $30+ billion revenue company through a combination of organic product development and aggressive acquisitions: ExactTarget, Demandware, MuleSoft, Tableau, and the landmark $27.7 billion acquisition of Slack in 2021. Each deal expanded Salesforce's platform beyond CRM into analytics, integration, collaboration, and AI. He has most recently positioned Salesforce as an "AI CRM" company with the Agentforce platform for autonomous AI agents. Benioff is known for his outsized personality, activist CEO style, and the "1-1-1" philanthropic model (donating 1% of equity, 1% of product, and 1% of employee time). He has been vocal on social issues including homelessness, equality, and climate change, sometimes drawing criticism from shareholders who prefer a purely financial focus. His leadership combines visionary product thinking with relentless salesmanship and a willingness to make bold, expensive bets.
