Ma Mingzhe

Founder & Former Chairman of Ping An Insurance · Ping An Insurance

global

Ma Mingzhe founded Ping An Insurance (Group) Company of China in 1988 in Shenzhen with just 13 employees, and over three decades built it into China's largest insurance company, one of the world's most valuable financial services groups, and — most remarkably — one of the world's largest technology companies by R&D spending. Ping An's market capitalization and total assets rank it among the top financial institutions globally, with over 227 million retail customers and 680 million internet users across its platforms. Ma's most revolutionary contribution was his insistence that Ping An should not merely be a financial company that uses technology, but rather a technology company that provides financial services. Under his leadership, Ping An invested over $10 billion in technology R&D over the past decade, employing over 30,000 tech developers. This investment produced a suite of technology platforms: Lufax (online wealth management), OneConnect (fintech infrastructure for banks), Ping An Good Doctor (China's largest online healthcare platform), and Ping An Smart City (government services technology). Though Ma stepped down from executive roles, his strategic architecture continues to define Ping An. The company's integrated model connects insurance, banking (Ping An Bank), investment, and technology platforms through shared data and AI capabilities — a moat that is difficult for traditional insurers or pure-play tech companies to replicate. Key stock variables include life insurance premium growth, investment portfolio performance (particularly real estate-linked assets amid China's property crisis), technology subsidiary valuations, and regulatory developments in China's financial sector.
