Trained at Tiger Management under Robertson; founded Maverick Capital (1993); $10B+ AUM; sector specialisation in consumer, tech, healthcare; known for analyst talent development and rigorous investment process.
Lee Ainslie studied electrical engineering and economics at the University of Virginia before earning his MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He joined Tiger Management after business school and worked directly for Julian Robertson, developing deep expertise in equity research and sector analysis. Ainslie was known at Tiger for his exceptionally thorough and systematic research process. He founded Maverick Capital in 1993, one year before Robertson himself closed Tiger Management, with initial backing from Robertson. Maverick pursued a concentrated long-short equity strategy with deep sector specialisation — particularly in consumer, technology, and healthcare companies — using intensive fundamental research to identify businesses with superior competitive positions. The firm developed a reputation for identifying and training exceptional equity analysts, building a culture of deep fundamental research that distinguished Maverick from many of its peers. At its peak Maverick managed over $10 billion in assets. Ainslie has been careful to avoid public profile-seeking, preferring to let Maverick's investment results speak for themselves. He serves on several nonprofit boards and is known for his commitment to talent development within the fund management industry.
