Laxman Narasimhan served as CEO of Starbucks from March 2023 to August 2024, leading the world's largest coffeehouse chain with over 38,000 stores in 80+ countries. Born in 1967 in Pune, India, Narasimhan earned degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Pune, an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, and a Master's from the London School of Economics. He spent 19 years at McKinsey & Company before serving as CEO of Reckitt Benckiser. Narasimhan was hand-picked by legendary Starbucks founder Howard Schultz, who came out of retirement specifically to find and mentor his successor. After joining Starbucks in October 2022, Narasimhan spent five months visiting stores, roasteries, and coffee farms before officially taking the CEO role — an unusually long apprenticeship designed by Schultz to immerse him in Starbucks culture. His tenure was marked by significant operational challenges: Starbucks faced a growing unionization movement across U.S. stores, slowing same-store sales growth, increased competition in China from local chains like Luckin Coffee, and the need to improve speed of service during peak hours. Narasimhan launched initiatives to simplify the menu, reduce drink preparation time, and improve the partner (employee) experience, while maintaining Starbucks' premium positioning. Despite his strategic efforts, Starbucks' stock price underperformed during his leadership as same-store sales declined and activist investor Elliott Management took a significant position. In August 2024, the board replaced Narasimhan with Brian Niccol, the successful CEO of Chipotle, in a move that immediately boosted Starbucks stock. Narasimhan's brief tenure illustrates the challenges of leading a brand-driven consumer company through operational transformation while satisfying investor expectations for growth.
