Founded Glenview in 2000; $10B+ AUM; invested long in HMOs ahead of ACA passage generating $1B+ gains; deep sector expertise in managed care, hospitals, pharma, and medical devices.
Larry Robbins studied economics at the University of Pennsylvania and received his MBA from Kellogg School of Management. He worked at Omega Advisors before founding Glenview Capital Management in 2000. Glenview specialises in long-biased equity investing with deep sector expertise, particularly in healthcare — managed care organisations, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and medical devices. Robbins's most celebrated trade was his positioning ahead of and following the Affordable Care Act (ACA): he invested heavily in hospital and managed care stocks, correctly anticipating that expanded insurance coverage would benefit healthcare companies. This trade is estimated to have generated over $1 billion in profits for Glenview. Glenview has also been an active participant in corporate governance, taking board seats at companies including Tenet Healthcare and others in the healthcare sector. The fund has grown to manage over $10 billion. Robbins is known for his intellectual depth and the intensity of his sector analysis — Glenview's analysts spend years developing expertise in specific healthcare sub-sectors. He has been transparent with investors about his investment process, publishing detailed annual letters explaining his framework. He is also known for significant philanthropy in education.
