Larry Coben
Runs the largest integrated competitive power company in the U.S. combining wholesale electricity generation with the retail brands Reliant, Green Mountain, and Vivint
Larry Coben leads NRG Energy as President and CEO, overseeing the largest integrated competitive power company in the United States. NRG's business model combines two complementary businesses: wholesale electricity generation (operating a fleet of power plants with over 20 GW of capacity including natural gas, coal, nuclear, wind, and solar) and retail electricity supply (selling power directly to residential, commercial, and industrial customers through brands including Reliant, Green Mountain Energy, Stream, XOOM, and Vivint Smart Home). The integrated model provides a natural hedge: when wholesale power prices are high, NRG's generation assets profit from selling expensive electricity; when wholesale prices are low, NRG's retail business benefits from cheaper procurement. This integration creates more stable earnings than either business would generate independently. NRG's acquisition of Vivint Smart Home in 2023 for approximately $5.2 billion expanded the company's retail customer base and added home security, solar, and smart home services. The growing demand for electricity from AI data centers has created a significant new growth opportunity, as hyperscalers seek reliable, cost-competitive power supply. Key stock drivers include wholesale electricity prices, retail customer counts and margins, natural gas prices, data center power demand, Vivint integration and synergies, renewable energy development, debt management, and the competitive dynamics in deregulated U.S. electricity markets.
