Kathleen Quirk

President & CEO of Freeport-McMoRan · Freeport-McMoRan

Leads the world's largest publicly traded copper producer, operating the legendary Grasberg mine in Indonesia — the world's largest gold mine and second-largest copper mine

Kathleen Quirk became President and CEO of Freeport-McMoRan in 2024, succeeding Richard Adkerson who led the company for two decades. Quirk, who served as CFO for many years, takes the helm at a pivotal moment: copper is increasingly viewed as the most critical metal for the energy transition, and Freeport — as the world's largest publicly traded copper producer — sits at the center of this thesis. Freeport's crown jewel is the Grasberg mining complex in Papua, Indonesia — the world's largest gold mine and second-largest copper mine, transitioning from an open pit to massive underground block cave operations (Grasberg Block Cave and Deep Mill Level Zone). The company also operates Morenci (the largest copper mine in North America, in Arizona), Cerro Verde (one of the largest copper mines in Peru), and multiple other operations in the Americas. Copper demand is being driven by electrification: each electric vehicle requires 4x more copper than a combustion vehicle, renewable energy installations require copper for wiring and transformers, data centers need copper for electrical infrastructure, and grid upgrades to handle growing electricity demand require massive amounts of copper. Meanwhile, new copper supply is constrained by long permitting timelines, declining ore grades, and community opposition to mining. Key stock drivers include copper prices (the overwhelmingly dominant driver), Grasberg underground ramp-up production volumes, gold prices (Grasberg is a massive gold producer), global copper supply/demand balance, Indonesian regulatory environment, electrification demand growth, and currency movements (IDR, PEN).
