Julian Robertson
Tiger Cub network, long/short equity, fundamental analysis, mentor to hedge fund managers
Julian Robertson founded Tiger Management in 1980 and built it into one of the largest hedge funds in the world, reaching $22 billion at its peak. His investment philosophy focused on rigorous fundamental research to identify the best and worst companies globally — "the best of the best long and the worst of the worst short." Robertson closed Tiger to outside investors in 2000 but continues to seed former employees who form the "Tiger Cubs" — a network of over 100 hedge funds including Viking Global (Ole Andreas Halvorsen), Coatue (Philippe Laffont), and Maverick Capital (Lee Ainslie). Robertson passed away in 2022. His legacy endures through the extraordinary talent he identified, trained, and backed — the Tiger Cub ecosystem collectively manages hundreds of billions of dollars and continues to shape the fundamental research culture of the global hedge fund industry.
