Jean-Marie Eveillard

Global Value Investor · First Eagle Funds

Global value investing, gold as portfolio insurance, European deep value companies, First Eagle fund franchise

Jean-Marie Eveillard is a French-born investor who worked at Société Générale before joining what became First Eagle Investment Management in New York. He managed the First Eagle Global Fund and the SoGen International Fund from 1979 onward, developing a global value investing approach that incorporated gold as portfolio insurance. His patient, long-term approach emphasized buying businesses at significant discounts to intrinsic value globally — particularly European and Japanese companies that American investors were ignoring — and holding through periods of apparent underperformance. He handed management to Abhay Deshpande and Charles de Vaulx while remaining involved. Morningstar named him Fixed Income Manager of the Year multiple times. His approach to global value investing with gold exposure became the First Eagle template.
