Co-Founder and Co-Chairman · Two Sigma Investments

Math olympiad silver medalist; studied mathematics at Stanford; worked at Amazon and D.E. Shaw; co-founded Two Sigma applying ML to finance; Two Sigma generates consistent exceptional risk-adjusted returns.

John Overdeck studied mathematics and statistics at Stanford University and won a silver medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad as a high school student — a marker of exceptional mathematical talent. He worked at D.E. Shaw, the pioneering quantitative trading firm founded by David Shaw, where he developed sophisticated statistical models for trading. He subsequently worked at Amazon, where he was involved in applying quantitative methods to business analytics. In 2001 he co-founded Two Sigma Investments with David Siegel and Mark Pickard, bringing together his mathematical expertise, statistical modelling skills, and experience at two of the world's most technically sophisticated organisations. At Two Sigma Overdeck has focused on developing the firm's core quantitative research infrastructure, building the mathematical and statistical foundations for the firm's trading strategies. Two Sigma's distinctive approach — treating every investment decision as a data science and engineering problem — has proved enormously successful, generating consistent returns across multiple market environments. The firm's culture of intellectual curiosity, rigorous experimentation, and data-driven decision-making reflects the mathematical backgrounds of its founders. Overdeck is also known for his philanthropic work in mathematics education through the Overdeck Family Foundation.
