Joel Marcus founded Alexandria Real Estate Equities in 1994 and essentially invented the life science real estate investment trust (REIT) category. ARE's tenant roster reads like a who's who of pharma and biotech — Moderna, Bristol Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly, and hundreds of venture-backed biotechs.
