Jim Umpleby

CEO of Caterpillar · Caterpillar

global

Jim Umpleby is the Chairman and CEO of Caterpillar Inc., the world's largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines, and diesel-electric locomotives. Born in 1967, Umpleby joined Caterpillar subsidiary Solar Turbines in 1980 and spent his entire career at the company, rising through the energy and transportation division before being named CEO in January 2017. Umpleby took the helm of Caterpillar during a cyclical downturn in mining and energy markets and implemented a strategic framework focused on operational excellence, expanded services, and disciplined capital allocation. His emphasis on growing the higher-margin services business — parts, maintenance contracts, digital monitoring — has transformed Caterpillar's revenue quality, making the company less dependent on volatile new equipment cycles. Under Umpleby's leadership, Caterpillar has delivered record financial results, with operating margins expanding significantly from historical averages. His focus on free cash flow generation and shareholder returns has made Caterpillar one of the best-performing industrial stocks, with the share price roughly tripling during his tenure. The company has also invested in autonomous mining trucks, electric construction equipment, and digital fleet management through Cat Digital. Caterpillar under Umpleby has become a key proxy for global infrastructure spending — when governments announce infrastructure bills, data center construction booms, or energy transition projects, Caterpillar is among the first beneficiaries. His leadership coincides with unprecedented infrastructure investment globally: the US IIJA, European Green Deal construction, and the massive global buildout of AI data centers that require earthmoving and power generation equipment on an enormous scale.
