Short Seller & Hedge Fund Manager · Kynikos Associates

Short selling, corporate fraud detection, China bearish thesis, equity research

Jim Chanos founded Kynikos Associates in 1985, building it into the world's largest dedicated short-selling hedge fund. He became famous for shorting Enron a year before its collapse in 2001, based on analysis of its complex accounting. Chanos also made a long-running and controversial bearish case on China's real estate sector, arguing for years that it was a massive credit bubble. He has been one of the most vocal advocates for short selling as a form of market discipline and fraud prevention. Kynikos wound down external client capital in 2023. His Enron short remains the most celebrated example of fundamental short selling in modern financial history — demonstrating that careful reading of footnotes, cash flow analysis, and skepticism about complex accounting structures can identify frauds that evade the attention of sell-side analysts, credit rating agencies, and auditors simultaneously.
