Jim Breyer earned his MBA from Harvard Business School and joined Accel Partners in 1987, eventually becoming its managing partner. His most famous investment is Facebook: in 2005 Breyer led Accel's $12.7 million investment in Facebook, acquiring approximately 11% of the company at a $98 million valuation. When Facebook went public in 2012 at a $100 billion valuation, Accel's stake was worth approximately $9 billion — making the Facebook Series A one of the most profitable single venture investments in history on an absolute dollar basis. Breyer also served on Facebook's board for many years. Beyond Facebook, Breyer backed Marvel Entertainment (which Disney acquired for $4 billion), partnered with IDG Capital in early China technology investments, and has been an active early-stage investor in artificial intelligence companies. After Accel he founded Breyer Capital in 2013, which manages over $1 billion focused on early-stage technology investments in the US, Europe, and China. Breyer is known for his ability to identify transformative consumer technology companies early and his willingness to build board relationships over many years with portfolio company founders.
