Jes Staley

Jes Staley became CEO of Barclays in 2015 after a 34-year career at JPMorgan where he led investment banking and private banking. At Barclays, he pushed to sustain the firm's investment banking business against shareholder pressure to downsize it. Staley resigned in November 2021 following a UK regulatory investigation into his characterization of his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. His tenure at Barclays is notable for its defense of the investment bank in an era when most European banks were retreating from the business. During his time at Barclays, the firm's investment banking division — known internally as Barclays Corporate & Investment Bank — maintained its position as one of the top fixed income houses globally, consistently ranking among the leading dealers in credit, rates, and foreign exchange markets.
