Jes Staley
UK investment banking strategy, Barclays franchise, institutional equities, FICC trading, investment bank business model debates
Jes Staley spent the majority of his career at JPMorgan Chase, rising to become CEO of the Investment Bank and head of Private Banking. He joined Barclays as CEO in 2015, taking over from Antony Jenkins who had pursued a strategy of scaling back investment banking. Staley reversed course, arguing that Barclays needed its investment bank to be competitive globally and fighting off activist shareholder Edward Bramson who pushed for further investment bank reductions. He negotiated regulatory requirements with FCA and PRA and positioned Barclays to capitalize on post-Brexit opportunities for European investment banking. He resigned in November 2021 following regulatory scrutiny of his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, which concluded he had mischaracterized the nature of their association to regulators.
