Jean-Laurent Bonnafé

CEO of BNP Paribas · BNP Paribas

global

Jean-Laurent Bonnafé has served as CEO of BNP Paribas since December 2011, making him one of the longest-serving leaders of a major global bank. A graduate of École Polytechnique and École des Mines de Paris, he is a quintessential product of the French grandes écoles system that produces the country's business and government elite. BNP Paribas under Bonnafé is the Eurozone's largest bank by total assets (over €2.6 trillion) and one of the world's most diversified financial institutions. The bank operates across three pillars: Corporate & Institutional Banking (capital markets, transaction banking, securities services), Commercial Personal Banking & Services (retail banking in France, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, and emerging markets), and Investment & Protection Services (asset management, insurance, wealth management). His tenure has been marked by significant challenges. In 2014, BNP Paribas was hit with a record $8.9 billion fine by U.S. authorities for violating sanctions against Sudan, Cuba, and Iran — the largest penalty ever imposed on a bank at the time. Bonnafé navigated this crisis without lasting damage to the franchise. He has also steered the bank through the European sovereign debt crisis, negative interest rate environment, Brexit disruptions, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Strategically, Bonnafé has pursued organic growth and bolt-on acquisitions rather than transformative mergers, most recently expanding in investment management and electronic trading capabilities. The bank's integrated model — combining retail banking's stable deposit base with investment banking's higher-margin activities — has provided more consistent earnings than pure-play investment banks. The challenge remains convincing investors that European banking can deliver American-style returns on equity in a structurally lower-rate environment.
