Jan Hatzius

Jan Hatzius is Chief Economist at Goldman Sachs, leading the Global Economics team. His forecasts and research notes on the US macroeconomic outlook, Federal Reserve policy, and global growth reach institutional investors, hedge fund managers, and corporate treasurers globally. Goldman Sachs's research distribution network means Hatzius's views have unusually wide market penetration — when he publishes a significant change to his GDP or inflation outlook, it is read by an enormous number of market participants. He has a strong track record of calling major macro turning points, including being early in predicting the depth of the 2008 recession. Hatzius holds a PhD in economics from Oxford and joined Goldman in 1997. His development of the Goldman Sachs Financial Conditions Index — a composite measure of funding costs, credit spreads, equity valuations, and exchange rates — has become a widely used tool for assessing the overall tightness of financial conditions in the US economy.
