Spun off from Danaher and applies the same legendary business system to industrial technology — building a $25 billion precision instrumentation and workflow software conglomerate

James Lico has led Fortive as President and CEO since its 2016 spin-off from Danaher Corporation. Fortive was created to house Danaher's industrial technology businesses, and it inherited the core operational DNA: the Fortive Business System (FBS), a continuous improvement methodology derived from the legendary Danaher Business System, is applied to every business to drive growth, margin expansion, and innovation. Fortive operates in three segments: Intelligent Operating Solutions (Fluke — the world's leading brand in test and measurement instruments, used by electricians, technicians, and engineers globally; Industrial Scientific — gas detection), Precision Technologies (Tektronix — oscilloscopes and electronic test equipment; Sensing Technologies — sensors for critical applications; Pacific Scientific — electromagnetic solutions), and Advanced Healthcare Solutions (divested via Vontier and other transactions, with remaining software and workflow assets). The company has increasingly shifted toward higher-margin, recurring-revenue software businesses through acquisitions: ServiceChannel (facility management software), Gordian (construction cost data and procurement), Accruent (physical resource management software), and eMaint (computerized maintenance management). This software pivot is designed to reduce cyclicality and increase the share of recurring revenue. Key stock drivers include industrial production activity, test & measurement demand, software recurring revenue growth, FBS-driven margin expansion, acquisition pipeline, competitive dynamics against Keysight and Danaher, and the overall health of industrial capex spending.
