Jack Ma

Founder of Alibaba Group · Alibaba Group

Founded Alibaba from an apartment, building China's largest e-commerce empire, then disappeared from public life after challenging regulators

Jack Ma (Ma Yun) co-founded Alibaba in 1999 with 17 friends in his Hangzhou apartment, building it into the most valuable company in China and one of the world's largest technology empires. A former English teacher who failed his college entrance exam twice, Ma became China's most visible and charismatic entrepreneur, embodying the country's economic rise. Under Ma's vision, Alibaba grew far beyond e-commerce. The ecosystem encompasses Taobao and Tmall (e-commerce), Alipay/Ant Group (fintech with over 1 billion users), Alibaba Cloud (China's largest cloud platform), Cainiao (logistics), and numerous entertainment and local services businesses. At its peak, Alibaba's market capitalization exceeded $800 billion, and Ma was the richest person in China. The turning point came in October 2020, when Ma publicly criticized China's financial regulators in a speech in Shanghai, calling state banks "pawn shops" and suggesting China's regulatory system was stifling innovation. Within weeks, regulators halted the Ant Group IPO — which would have been the largest in history at $37 billion — and launched antitrust investigations into Alibaba that resulted in a record $2.8 billion fine. Ma disappeared from public view for months, triggering global speculation about his fate. He has since made sporadic, carefully controlled appearances but has effectively withdrawn from the business world. His fate sent a chilling message to Chinese entrepreneurs about the boundaries of private enterprise under Xi Jinping's governance. Alibaba itself has since restructured into six independent business groups, with its stock still trading far below its 2020 highs — a lasting consequence of the regulatory reset Ma's defiance triggered.
