Israel Englander

Founder and CEO of Millennium Management · Millennium Management

Created the pod model for multi-strategy hedge funds — hundreds of independent trading teams each with their own capital allocation, risk limits, and P&L accountability — that became the dominant organizational structure for large hedge funds globally.

Born in 1948 in Brooklyn, New York, Englander grew up in a modest household and attended New York University, where he studied finance. He began his career as a floor trader on the American Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange before founding Millennium Management in 1989 with $35 million in seed capital. Millennium's distinctive approach is its multi-portfolio structure — often called the "pod" model — in which the firm employs hundreds of independent portfolio management teams, each responsible for their own strategy, risk management, and profit and loss. This structure allows Millennium to deploy capital across a vast range of strategies simultaneously while maintaining granular risk control at the pod level. The firm applies systematic risk management across all pods, with central risk controls that can cut individual teams if losses exceed predetermined thresholds. This approach has allowed Millennium to maintain one of the most consistent long-term records in the hedge fund industry — generating approximately 14-15% annual net returns since inception through 2023, with only one down year in its history. Millennium has grown into one of the largest hedge funds in the world, managing approximately $70 billion in assets. The firm employs several thousand people across offices in New York, London, Hong Kong, and other financial centers, with portfolio managers spanning equity market neutral, merger arbitrage, convertible arbitrage, fixed income, commodities, and systematic strategies. Englander is known as a patient, long-term builder who has never returned capital to investors involuntarily and who manages the firm with intense focus on talent retention and risk culture.
