Philippe Kehren

CEO of Solvay · Solvay

Runs the essential chemistry business spun from the historic Solvay Group — soda ash, peroxides, and silica serving glass, detergent, and industrial markets.

Philippe Kehren serves as CEO of Solvay, the essential chemicals company created from the 2023 demerger of the historic Solvay Group (founded in 1863 by Ernest Solvay, inventor of the Solvay process for producing soda ash). The demerger split the group into two listed companies: Solvay (essential chemicals) and Syensqo (specialty chemicals and advanced materials). The new Solvay focuses on three core product lines: Soda Ash & Derivatives (sodium carbonate — essential for flat glass production, container glass, detergents, and lithium carbonate processing), Peroxides & Chemicals (hydrogen peroxide for pulp and paper bleaching, water treatment, and electronics; persulfates for printed circuit board manufacturing), and Silica (precipitated silica used in green tire manufacturing — reducing rolling resistance and fuel consumption). Soda ash is experiencing a structural demand boost from the solar energy boom: solar panels require significant quantities of flat glass, which is made using soda ash. The EV battery industry also creates demand through lithium carbonate processing (which uses soda ash as a reagent). Solvay operates the world's largest natural soda ash mine (Green River, Wyoming) and synthetic soda ash plants in Europe. Key stock drivers include soda ash pricing and demand, solar panel production growth, flat glass demand, peroxide volumes, silica demand from tire manufacturers, and energy costs at synthetic soda ash plants.
