Ilan Goldfajn served as Governor of the Banco Central do Brasil from 2016 to 2019, overseeing Brazil's implementation of a formal inflation targeting framework and navigating the country through economic and political turbulence. He later became a senior IMF official. Goldfajn is a respected macroeconomist who has contributed to the intellectual development of inflation targeting frameworks in emerging markets. His work on exchange rate regimes and monetary policy credibility is widely cited in the Latin American economics literature. He earned his PhD in economics from MIT and subsequently taught at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. During his tenure at the BCB, he oversaw a dramatic easing cycle as Brazil's inflation came under control following the severe recession of 2015-2016. He subsequently became president of Itaú BBA, the investment banking arm of Itaú Unibanco, Brazil's largest private bank. In 2022, he became President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), focusing on the bank's role in financing climate adaptation, digital transformation, and infrastructure in Latin America and the Caribbean. His career spans academic research, central banking, commercial banking, and multilateral development finance.
