Horst Paulmann

Founder & Chairman of Cencosud · Cencosud

global

Horst Paulmann is the founder and chairman of Cencosud S.A., Latin America's largest and most diversified retail conglomerate. Born in 1935 in Germany and emigrated to Chile as a child, Paulmann opened his first store in 1963 and spent six decades building Cencosud into a retail empire with over 1,100 locations across five countries — Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. Cencosud's portfolio spans multiple retail formats: Jumbo and Santa Isabel supermarkets, Paris department stores, Easy home improvement stores, shopping centers, and a growing financial services arm (Cencosud credit cards). The company is the largest supermarket operator in Chile and Argentina, with significant presence in Brazil through the Bretas and GBarbosa chains and in Peru through Wong and Metro stores. At nearly 90, Paulmann remains actively involved as chairman, with his children increasingly taking on operational roles. The succession question — how the transition from founder-patriarch to the next generation of Paulmann family leaders will affect strategy and governance — is a persistent investor concern. Key strategic variables include same-store sales growth in an inflationary Latin American environment, e-commerce penetration, real estate value of the shopping center portfolio, geographic mix optimization, and capital allocation between store renovation, new openings, and shareholder returns. Paulmann's decisions on the pace of digital transformation, loyalty program expansion, and management succession planning are the primary drivers of the stock's long-term trajectory.
