Herman Gref has served as Chairman and CEO of Sberbank since 2007, executing one of the most ambitious bank transformations in global history. Before Sberbank, Gref served as Russia's Minister of Economic Development and Trade (2000-2007), where he was considered one of the key reformist voices in the Putin government. At Sberbank, he inherited a lumbering state savings bank with Soviet-era processes and over 100 million customer accounts — and set about making it Russia's dominant technology and financial services company. Under Gref's leadership, Sberbank invested billions in technology, recruiting top engineering talent and building platforms that rival dedicated tech companies. The bank developed GigaChat (Russia's answer to ChatGPT), a cloud computing platform (SberCloud), data analytics capabilities, and a suite of consumer services under the Sber ecosystem umbrella: SberMarket (e-commerce), SberFood (food delivery), SberLogistics, SberAuto, and SberHealth. Gref's vision was explicitly modeled on Chinese super-apps like WeChat and Alipay. Western sanctions following Russia's actions in Ukraine have profoundly impacted Sberbank — the bank was sanctioned by the U.S. and EU, cut off from SWIFT, and its international operations were severely curtailed. However, domestically, Sberbank's dominance has actually increased as Western banks withdrew from Russia and Russian consumers and businesses concentrated more activity with Sber. The stock trades only on the Moscow Exchange. Key variables include Russian economic conditions, Central Bank of Russia monetary policy, sanctions evolution, domestic competitive dynamics, and the profitability of Gref's ecosystem investments.
