Hein Schumacher

CEO of Unilever · Unilever

global

Hein Schumacher became CEO of Unilever in July 2023, replacing Alan Jope whose tenure was marked by sluggish growth, a failed £50 billion bid for GSK's consumer health division, and criticism from activist investor Nelson Peltz of Trian Partners, who joined the board in 2022. Schumacher, a Dutch executive who had been CEO of FrieslandCampina, was seen as a back-to-basics operator who could restore commercial discipline. Unilever is one of the world's largest consumer goods companies, with a portfolio of over 400 brands including Dove, Hellmann's, Knorr, Rexona, Magnum, Ben & Jerry's, and Vaseline. The company operates across Beauty & Wellbeing, Personal Care, Home Care, Nutrition, and Ice Cream divisions, selling in over 190 countries with approximately 60% of revenue from emerging markets. Schumacher's "Growth Action Plan" announced in March 2024 represents the most significant restructuring in Unilever's recent history. The plan involves: separating and ultimately divesting the entire Ice Cream division (which includes Magnum, Ben & Jerry's, and Wall's) as a standalone business; cutting 7,500 jobs (about 6% of the workforce); eliminating one of Unilever's management layers to speed up decision-making; and concentrating investment behind 30 "Power Brands" that account for approximately 75% of group revenue. The deeper challenge Schumacher faces is cultural. Under previous CEO Paul Polman and Jope, Unilever became synonymous with purpose-driven marketing, sometimes at the expense of commercial performance. Schumacher has explicitly prioritized "performance over purpose," signaling a shift toward harder metrics and accountability. Whether he can accelerate volume growth, improve margins, and close the valuation gap with peers like Procter & Gamble and Nestlé will determine whether this reset succeeds or whether Unilever faces further pressure from activist investors.
