global
Hans De Cuyper is the CEO of Ageas, a Belgian insurance company with a unique European-Asian footprint. Ageas emerged from the 2008 collapse and breakup of Fortis, one of the largest corporate disasters in European history. From those ashes, Ageas was rebuilt into a focused, profitable insurance group operating primarily through bancassurance partnerships — distributing insurance products through bank networks rather than maintaining expensive proprietary sales forces. De Cuyper's strategy centers on Ageas's distinctive partnership model. In Belgium, Ageas partners with AG Insurance (the country's largest insurer) and BNP Paribas Fortis. In Asia, the company has joint ventures in China (with ICBC, the world's largest bank), Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, and India. This asset-light model delivers attractive returns on equity without the capital intensity of owning distribution networks outright. The Asian operations provide growth exposure that the mature Belgian market cannot. His key decisions involve managing the balance between stable European cash flows and higher-growth Asian partnerships, capital management and dividend policy, navigating Solvency II regulatory requirements, and evaluating opportunities to expand the partnership network. Ageas's share price is driven by combined ratio performance, investment portfolio returns, and the growth trajectory of its Asian joint ventures.
