Magellan Financial Group Founder · Magellan Financial Group

Australian institutional asset management, global equity investing, infrastructure investing, fund manager entrepreneur model

Hamish Douglass co-founded Magellan Financial Group in Sydney in 2006 with Chris Mackay. Starting with virtually no capital, he built the firm through a concentrated approach to global equity investing — focusing on exceptional businesses with durable competitive advantages — and later through infrastructure strategies. Magellan grew rapidly to manage over $100 billion, becoming one of Australia's most significant fund management businesses. Douglass became one of Australia's most celebrated investors, giving extensive public commentary on markets and investment philosophy. However, a highly public leadership crisis in 2021-2022 — involving personal difficulties and investment underperformance — led to his departure and a dramatic contraction in assets under management, one of the more dramatic falls from grace in Australian finance.
