Li Shufu
China's most ambitious car tycoon — who bought Volvo from Ford, became Daimler's largest shareholder, and built Zeekr as a premium EV brand challenging Tesla
Li Shufu founded Geely Automobile in 1986, starting as a refrigerator manufacturer before pivoting to automobiles. He is now one of China's most influential industrialists, having built Geely Holding Group into a global automotive empire through a series of audacious acquisitions and investments. The $1.8 billion acquisition of Volvo Cars from Ford Motor in 2010 shocked the industry — few believed a Chinese company could successfully manage a premium European brand. Under Li's stewardship, Volvo has thrived, and Geely has expanded further: acquiring Lotus (the British sports car maker), Proton (Malaysian automaker), London Electric Vehicle Company, and becoming the largest single shareholder in Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler AG. The listed Geely Automobile Holdings operates the Geely brand (mass-market), Lynk & Co (premium brand jointly developed with Volvo technology), and holds a stake in Zeekr (premium EV brand listed separately). Zeekr has emerged as one of China's most promising premium EV brands, competing with NIO, Li Auto, and Tesla in the high-end segment. Key stock drivers include total vehicle sales volumes, EV penetration and Zeekr growth, margins in the intensely competitive Chinese auto market, Volvo/Geely technology synergies, international expansion (particularly into Europe and Southeast Asia), and the competitive dynamics of China's brutal EV price war.
