Georges Elhedery

CEO of HSBC · HSBC

global

Georges Elhedery is the CEO of HSBC Holdings plc, one of the world's largest banking and financial services organizations, with assets exceeding $3 trillion and operations across 60+ countries. Born in 1974 in Lebanon, Elhedery was raised during the Lebanese civil war and earned degrees in mathematics and applied mathematics from École Polytechnique in France, as well as an MBA from INSEAD. He joined HSBC in 2005 after working at Goldman Sachs and other financial institutions. Elhedery's career at HSBC was built in the Global Banking and Markets division, where he established himself as one of the bank's top revenue generators. He served as co-head of Global Markets, led the Global Banking and Markets division, and was appointed CFO in 2023 before being named CEO in July 2024, assuming the role in September 2024 upon Noel Quinn's retirement. His appointment signals HSBC's continued commitment to its Asia-focused strategy, where the bank generates the majority of its profits. Elhedery's first major decision was a sweeping organizational restructuring, consolidating HSBC's four business divisions into two — an Eastern markets unit and a Western markets unit — in a move designed to reduce complexity and empower regional leadership. He also announced significant cost reduction targets to offset the pressure from potentially declining interest rate income. Elhedery leads HSBC at a complex geopolitical moment, with the bank straddling Western regulatory expectations and its deep commercial ties to China and Hong Kong. His fluency in Arabic, French, and English, his understanding of global capital markets, and his experience managing cross-border complexity position him for this challenge. However, he must prove that the restructuring delivers tangible results while maintaining HSBC's dominant position in Asian trade finance, wealth management, and commercial banking.
