Gavin Wood

Co-founder of Ethereum, creator of Solidity, founder of Polkadot · Parity Technologies / Polkadot

Created Solidity (Ethereum's programming language), wrote the Ethereum Yellow Paper, then founded Polkadot for cross-chain interoperability

Gavin Wood is one of the most technically accomplished figures in blockchain history. As co-founder of Ethereum, he authored the Ethereum Yellow Paper — the formal specification that turned Vitalik Buterin's vision into an implementable system — and created Solidity, the programming language used by the vast majority of smart contract developers. Wood holds a PhD from the University of York, where his research focused on music visualization. He brought rigorous formal thinking to Ethereum's early development, writing the first functional Ethereum client (in C++) and serving as the project's CTO. After departing the Ethereum Foundation in 2016, he founded Parity Technologies and built the Parity Ethereum client, which at its peak ran roughly half of all Ethereum nodes. In 2016, Wood published the Polkadot whitepaper, proposing a fundamentally different architecture: a relay chain connecting heterogeneous, application-specific blockchains (parachains) through shared security. The Substrate framework, developed by Parity, lowered the barrier to launching custom blockchains and became one of the most significant open-source contributions in the space. Polkadot launched its relay chain in 2020 and began onboarding parachains through slot auctions in 2021. Wood also coined the term "Web3" in 2014, envisioning a decentralized internet stack long before the concept became a marketing buzzword. His contributions span language design, formal specification, consensus research, and framework engineering — a breadth matched by few in the industry.
