Gautam Adani

Founder & Chairman of Adani Group · Adani Group

global

Gautam Adani is the founder and chairman of the Adani Group, India's largest private infrastructure conglomerate. Born in 1962 in Gujarat, Adani dropped out of college, worked as a diamond sorter in Mumbai, and returned to Ahmedabad to begin trading commodities in 1988. From that modest start, he built an empire that now encompasses India's largest private port operator (Adani Ports & SEZ), major coal mining and trading operations, power generation and transmission, airports (managing seven Indian airports including Mumbai), data centers, cement (after acquiring Ambuja and ACC), and green energy ventures. Adani's ascent has been defined by two characteristics: an extraordinary ability to identify and execute on India's infrastructure bottlenecks, and a willingness to take on massive leverage to fund growth. The Adani Group's stocks soared to astronomical valuations by 2022, making Adani briefly the world's third-richest person. In January 2023, US short-seller Hindenburg Research published a damning report alleging accounting fraud and stock manipulation, triggering a ~$150 billion market cap wipeout across Adani Group companies. Adani Group vigorously denied the allegations, and the stocks have since partially recovered as the companies continued to deliver on operational metrics. His decisions on capital expenditure timing across Adani Group's sprawling portfolio, the pace of debt reduction post-Hindenburg, the green energy transition strategy (targeting 45 GW renewable capacity), and navigating regulatory and political dynamics in India are the primary variables driving valuations across all listed Adani entities. Adani Enterprises serves as the group's incubator for new businesses, while Adani Ports is the most mature and cash-generative entity.
