Euisun Chung

Euisun Chung is the Executive Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, the world's third-largest automobile manufacturer by volume, encompassing the Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands along with parts maker Hyundai Mobis and robotics subsidiary Boston Dynamics. Born in 1970 in Seoul, South Korea, he is the son of Hyundai Motor founder Chung Mong-koo and grandson of Hyundai Group founder Chung Ju-yung, making him the third generation to lead one of South Korea's most powerful chaebol dynasties. Chung's strategic vision has fundamentally repositioned Hyundai Motor Group. When he took effective control in the mid-2010s (formally becoming Executive Chairman in 2020), the group was known primarily for value-oriented vehicles. He invested aggressively in design, quality, and technology — the results are visible in vehicles like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, which have won global design awards and compete directly with Tesla and premium European brands. The Genesis luxury brand was elevated from a model name to a standalone premium division. His most ambitious bets extend beyond traditional automotive. Chung's acquisition of Boston Dynamics in 2020 for nearly $1 billion signaled his vision for Hyundai as a future mobility and robotics company, not merely a carmaker. He has committed $18+ billion to electrification through 2030, invested in autonomous driving through partnerships and internal development, and established Supernal, a subsidiary developing electric air taxis for urban air mobility. Chung's leadership style differs markedly from the authoritarian management associated with first-generation chaebol founders. He has delegated significant authority to professional managers, fostered a more open corporate culture, and invested heavily in software engineering talent.
